EASTER IN RUSSIA

Pussy Willows represent the palms and leaves that were laid in the streets on Palm Sunday for the Savior as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.  These are taken to the church the Sunday before Easter.  They are for sale all over the streets

These Easter cakes are for sale on the streets.  The people take these and their colored eggs (traditionally the eggs were red but now they are any color) to the local Russian Orthodox church to be blessed by the priest.

The orthodox priest consecrates holy water and then sprinkles the cakes and eggs to bless them.  He wanders through the crowd chanting, sprinkling, and blessing

People crowded in the yard of a church to have their food blessed.  This is done outside on the grounds of the church, not inside.

Our contribution to the Easter celebration.  The cakes had raisins in them and some were much better than others.  Some had powdered sugar sprinkled on them and some had colored sprinkles.  They are always round in shape.
