40th Wedding Anniversay in Novorossyisk

View of Novorossyisk Black Sea Harbor from our hotel window. We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary here on June 12, 2010.

On Sunday we visited the little branch here which has a membership of 50 people but only 12-15 show up. There are two elders serving here; Elder Campbell from Pleasantview (yup, home of Paulette's mother, and a mini elder from Rustov serving for six weeks.) We street contacted with them for a little while.

Pronounced: Novo-ree-see-isk

World War II battleship that was docked in the harbor. You could tour it if you wanted. We could not because as missionaries we cannot tour military places, even if invited.

We decided we owed it to ourselves to cruise the Black Sea for our 40th anniversary. How's that for an adventure! The sea is a beautiful turquoise color, the sea breeze on our faces felt good after scorching humid weather, and the price was right - $ 6.00 for an hour cruise for two! This made up for the $ 30 lasagna dinner we had a few hours later which consisted of two pieces of lasagna, a coke, and a bottle of very expensive $ 6.00 water. It was the only restaurant we found that had pictures on the menu so that we could understand what we were ordering. Oh well, chock it up to a cultural experience.

We've decided the Russians like "really big" statues. They were everywhere in this sea front park.

Novorossyisk is a major Russian port. A lot of grain is exported from here. This city is also a major cement producing area for Russia as seen in the picture on the left. There were huge barges anchored in the harbor. The picture on the right is a small view of the beautiful park that ran all along the harbor.

Most beaches in Russia are not sand, but rock.  You have to be hardy to lay on the rocks as you get the tan (Elder Patterson's back ached for weeks). The Black Sea has less salt content than most oceans.
