First Project

Wednesday we visited this center called Avis (Avis means wings). They took us on a tour of the facility, talked to us about their objectives, etc. We were very impressed with the facility, their purpose, and their methods. The center was clean, well ordered, and had a feeling of peace and serenity that we felt. We saw bedrooms of the children, therapy rooms, the woodshop, sewing, and computer centers as well as a classroom for the youngest children (3 yrs to 18 yrs) and the dining room. We left them with a packet of material that needs to be filled out after hearing their ideas of the things we could help them with. It was a very rewarding experience for us and we look forward to hopefully working with them, especially in view of one of our church members being a resident there. I want to name the project either "Because of Adrianna" or "Wind Beneath My Wings." They knew of this song by Bet Midler. One of their teachers wrote a song that the children sing about "Wings." They invited us to a program they will be doing towards the end of June which we gladly accepted. We'll keep you posted on this, our very own first project.

Therapy room that we hope to paint, do room darkening drapes and provide therapy equipment that is sorely needed for these emotionally scarred and broken children.

Our interpretor, Sasha; Paulette; Olga, the center director; Olyesa, one of the psychologists on staff at the Avis Center

We have three additional projects in various stages of completion that were left over from the Howards. Two of these projects involve computer software for blind centers to use as training to help blind people use the computer.
